Dillinger’s last Solar Return

Dillinger’s last Solar Return occurred in 1934, shortly before his final days.

His precession corrected Tropical Solar Return chart is shown at the left. Since the end of March, he had been on the run, tailed by the FBI.  His girlfriend had been arrested in Chicago along with the girlfriend of one of his gang members.  Dillinger and an associate, Van Meter, robbed a police station in Warsaw, Indiana, of guns and more bullet-proof vests.  They fled to Michigan, only to be trailed by the FBI from whom they barely escaped.  They chose Wisconsin as their next hideaway.  By then, the public had started providing tips to the FBI, seeking a reward for Dillinger’s capture.  We can examine Dillinger’s 1934 p.c. Solar Return chart to see what it indicated for that time and the year ahead.

  • Sun/Sun was in the 12th, square the vertical axis; his public standing and life goals would be challenged by his attitude and actions — in other words, this was a “high risk” year for him.  Given the natal conjunction of Sun with Neptune, we would expect his judgement to be faulty.
  • Ascendant conjunct transiting Mercury and Pluto; dramatic and hidden movement, secretiveness, plans — are all suggested by this combination.   Natal Pluto is part of the Pluto-opposite-Uranus-and-square-Jupiter natal T-Square pattern, so all of those planets are pulled into our view of how transiting Pluto and Mercury might work out for him.  His sense of “opportunity thru sudden and violent action” is part of his approach to life at this point–his stealing of guns and bullet-proof vests were part of this planetary picture.  Natal Mercury is part of a grand trine with Saturn and Mars — having an action plan to guide him is part of his approach to life.  Unfortunately, such plans often “lock” one into a course of action which might be better served by being more spontaneous.  In this case, he chose to remain in the same geographical area where he had previously been active.
  • Natal Mars at the IC, transiting Mars at the midpoint of Mercury and Pluto brings the natal T-Square and natal Grand Trine together, along with transiting Mercury-Pluto at the Ascendant. In effect, his whole chart is being activated.  Between the T-Square (his challenges and struggles) and his Grand-Trine (his habit patterns and way of operating) he will follow the attitude-action-situation patterns that he had employed his whole adult life.  Whatever his life had been would be up for review and assessment this year.

With the S/R MC approaching the natal MC, we would expect to see a major crossroad in his life being experienced in a few weeks, perhaps 18 days or so later.  A bit beyond that, the transiting Sun would be approaching the Natal Ascendant, the progressing Ascendant would be near the natal Venus.  Venus is often significant in PDA charts at the time of death — a sort of balancing of one’s life achievements with the type or nature of passing and recognition from society.

This is a good chart for students of Solar Return charts to study.  The context of one’s life up until this point needs to be brought into consideration.  The interaction between natal planets and patterns with transiting planets and angles is what we use to apply the context of one’s life (recent life) to the chart.  By sticking with simple interpretations at first, one can better grasp how the complexity of life and of the astrological chart are supportive of each other.  Dave

These practices and four years of archived material are available for study or reading at ninthhouse.wordpress.com A new book, Personal Prediction ISBN 978-9-615-63033-5, has been published and the MC-Solar Cycle technique is now supported through a recognized software provider so that all students and practicing astrologers can apply these techniques for their own use. Recently, Dave has been exploring a new charting format:, transiting Moon to natal Sun Return charts. These moon-sun returns show how see seek to maintain or deal with change in our lives. Hi do u also run personal new moons??? u know when the moon is conjunct the sun??? I do because I am a full moon baby born 9-28-58. I think full moon people respond very well to new moon or sun and moon cionjunct charts

Hello, Ginger. I have run many new moon charts relative to the natal chart. As you noted, people born near the new and full moon periods often respond very markedly to these types of charts. I have a daughter born within hours of a Solar Eclipse whose natal and transit charts do not work at all, but place her natal chart into a new moon and you can read her like a book. As Donna Cunningham points out, there are Lunar types in a Solar oriented world. If you wish to post a similar comment in Paris Hilton’s reviews, I can slip in a new moon chart for one of her events and we can 1) see how it works out, and 2) see if others are also interested in those types of charts. Thanks for visiting my blog. I’m currently working against a deadline to prepare a presentation for the 2012 United Astrological Conference in New Orleans. Only have a few days to record my presentation and provide slides for the review committee. This is why I’m not posting more frequently right now. Dave
