During the 1970s daily news stories covered the U.S. Space Program, the early one-man sub-orbital launches out over the Atlantic Ocean from Cape Canaveral, the longer single-orbit-and-back and multiple orbits of Apollo space capsules, and later the journeys to the Moon and back. Astronauts became famous, NASA could do no wrong. All of this work and preparation meant that NASA’s programs were expanding. The time to prepare rockets and ships was lengthening, the number of highly trained people were not sufficient to meed the program’s needs. NASA made a call for applicants, opening possibilities for women as well as men in their Astronaut training program. These announcements caught the attention of a student at Swarthmore College in PA. Sally sent a short note seeking application, later another more detailed application. The first chart below is for a t/Moon-to-n/Sun Return prior to her submitting an application.
This t/Moon-to-n/Sun Return is set in the 3rd house, which seems appropriate for contacting via mail someone for a job interview at that time. The book “theme” for a 3rd house Return is “Alertness, inquisitiveness, being involved with those around you. Study, exchange of information. Selling yourself. Writing, dealing with agreements Shopping, not necessarily buying. Visits from neighbors or relatives. News of significance. Travel or talking to prove a point.”
t/Neptune-MC; the classic inspiration and vision/dream for a career interpretation is quite appropriate. This single angular position tells the story. Not that there are not other interesting factors to look at in this chart. Note t/Sun approaching n/Moon in the 12th; an intent to follow a secret longing. Or the t/Part of Fortune contacting n/Uranus; seeking a chance to express and follow a unique path. As always, the natal chart feeds into future life events quite well. n/Sun-n/Mars gives Sally a driving, daring approach to life. Those of us who remember her, or who will follow this series of postings, will know that an aggressive approach to living life fully is a hallmark of this amazing woman. Now, to look at the Advanced Chart for the day she sent her application.
t/Neptune is still close to the MC angle a few days later. t/Moon has reached the IC angle; a response to a new venture is acted upon. Sally is thrilled by the possible outcome of this application mailing to NASA. t/PoF conjoins n/Venus; Sally really wants this to work out for her. All of her passion rides with this application.
Now, lets again look at another part of her natal chart; the Asc.-Pluto conjunction opposing n/Moon. We can feel the great intensity behind this personality at this point in her life.
Supportive patterns add to the texture of the interpretation. t/PoF squares t/Pluto which is approaching n/Neptune, fueling the dream. t/Mercury-t/Mars broadly oppose n/Venus; she will do all she can to secure what is offered by others.
This simple, common everyday act of doing something to advance one’s goals in life is something that each of us does at various times in our life. Perhaps this simple act of starting the pursuit of something better works well for us as it did for Sally Ride. Perhaps we have the same drive to pursue higher dreams. What ever, these simple charts reflect a simple point in life. An important point, but a simple point.
As we use these charts to develop a “look-ahead” diary for ourselves we will find that the charts mirror our experience. Since we can develop the charts prior to the dates they represent, we can predict our future. That “prediction” is qualified by several factors. We each have a personalized manner in how we live our symbols. We also have an ongoing flow or ‘context’ to our life and directions that we currently follow. These t/Moon-to-n/Sun Return charts reflect the changes that come into our life and the way we seek to redirect and balance life. In effect we have a series of each-day photos of our life. Instead of trying to see the flow of life against a regular natal chart, we are placing a natal chart into s swirling, changing transiting chart that is oriented to a different set of house structures (read as current experiences) that show life as it comes at us today.
Not all charts have to exciting and overwhelming to be interesting. We learn best by studying each day as it occurs. Dave.
