Part 3; An Intentional Meeting

Yoko and John photo-5

On April 12, 1968, John Lennon and the Beatles left India and returned to London. During their ‘retreat’ to India, Yoko had been busy promoting herself and her artwork in London, plus sending John various letters and reminders of herself on an almost daily basis.  The spider was weaving her web.  Upon John’s return to his home, Yoko showed up there without an invitation or advance notice.  The book I use for reference, an unauthorized biography titled “Yoko Ono” by Jerry Hopkins, did not specifically state that the trip from India was completed on April 12th, merely that they left India on April 12th — so this return could have been on April 13th.

YOMopp@4-09-1968

This Return chart occurred on April 9th, 1968.  Interesting is the prior Solar Eclipse at 8:19 Aries several days earlier and the upcoming Lunar Eclipse a few days later at 23:19 Libra.  The Solar Eclipse conjoins the MC angle an t/Mercury.  The Lunar Eclipse of April 12 is not yet contacted by the t/Sun.  Mercury-MC-Elipse suggests that Yoko will contact one who will shape her life’s path.  Note that the horizontal axis is not populated and that the vertical axis has only the upcoming Solar Eclipse and t/Mercury at the MC.  This is what the whole Return chart’s meaning is based on.  It is not uncommon for a Return or an Advanced chart to have a single interpretive factor.  Of course, we cannot forget the theme of a 2nd house Moon opposing an 8th house Sun (in part); “. . .Confidence to be shown in the face of competition.  Emotions to be kept in check.  Others may show stress, you have to show absurdness.  Drawing upon one’s own resources.”  The part concerning money management has been omitted.  Let us now look at the Advanced chart for April 12th.

YOAdv4-12-1968

This date is significant for Yoko.  t/Venus, MC, t/Mercury-Solar Eclipse  of March 28, 1968 are grouped at the top of the chart.  For Yoko, the signs of a ‘fated’ moment could not be more evident.  Further, t/Sun has now opposed the Lunar Eclipse on this very same date, April 12th. These are powerful chart statements.  Few of us would have such a strong indicator for a given event in our life.

There is a doubled-up Neptune in this chart; the n/Neptune at the pre-natal Solar Eclipse point and t/Neptune contacting the n/Asc. The drama and art scene that is wrapped up around Yoko, and John’s awareness and deep response to Yoko’s world is involved here.  Yoko’s personal planets, Mercury and Venus, at the MC and Solar Eclipse point to her creative nature being put on display for John’s benefit.

Yoko showed up at John’s home.  They talked, they created a ‘musical’ tape of strange sounds which they would later promote as art, they enjoyed each other’s company.  The next morning, John’s wife, Cynthia, returned home to find Yoko in the kitchen having breakfast.  Yoko never batted an eye.  The Return chart’s theme of self-asurdness fits with this socially awkward scene.

In the months that followed, John and Yoko became a familiar couple on the London art scene.  John had been captivated by this quiet self-proclaimed artist.  In following posts we will explore other events in Yoko’s life.  Dave

Part 2: A Consequential Meeting for Yoko

John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1971

Yoko Ono and John Lennon met on Nov. 9, 1966.  It was a most consequential meeting for both of them.  I’m not sure when this photo was taken but, for me, it shows them as I remember them from that time period.  In this post, the charts for their first meeting will be explored.  Yoko’s natal chart and the Moon-Sun Return charts are relocated to London, England, 000w10, 51n30.  I am referring to a book, Yoko Ono by Jerry Hopkins, 1966, published by Macmilllan Publishers of New York and London.

Yoko was visiting London with friends.  She had made news with her “Cut Piece” presentation which will be covered in another post.  The evening of Nov. 9, Yoko met John at the Indica Gallery.  John wandered into the Gallery.  But, we get ahead of the story.  The t/Moon-opp-n/Sun Return chart is shown below.

YOMoppS11-07-1966metJohn

Appropriately, the horizontal axis is heavily populated.  This tells us that this period is about people and experiences to be encountered.

t/Uranus, n/Jupiter, n/MC, t/Pluto all hover at or just above the Asc. MC-ASc tells us that her life direction will be affected by meeting someone.  Uranus-Jupiter-Pluto indicates great happiness and joy from this meeting. The presence  of t/Chiron-t/Saturn at the Desc. angle suggest that care has to be exercised with those whom Yoko will meet.  With t/Moon-n/Sun, from 12th to 6th house, a theme is suggested in which one can be tugged in two directions at once.  What is asked, what might be received, how is a balance to be found.  We will consider this after looking at the Advanced chart for Nov. 9th.

YOAdv11-09-1966metJohn

On Nov. 9th, two days later, the t/Moon had moved to the first house; meeting others, being in a public place.

t/PoF-t/Jupiter in the 11th amplified n/Jupiter-Asc.; Yoko would meet someone from who would represent an opportunity or ‘enlargement’ of her world.  The opposition to n/Saturn-n/Venus in the 5th might suggest many things such as a ‘tough love.’  Certainly, it did not represent fireworks at their first contact.  John did not act as if he had been overly impressed at meeting Yoko.  She had not seemed to be impressed by him.  Their initial meeting was quite short.  Later, both said that they recognized some special in each other at that meeting.  From this time forward, Yoko was deeply involved with a partner, Dunbar, in promoting her art work.  So, Yoko’s personal story and life would be changed by this meeting, but that would not be apparent for a while yet.

So, what might this relate to?  John Lennon had not slept much for the previous three days and was using drugs.  In other words, he was not at his best.  Certainly not a “best” that would impress many.  Perhaps his celebrity would carry him past criticism.  John and a friend wandered the gallery where Yoko was staging a showing.  There was casual talk between them as John wandered about.  The opening of the Galley was to be on the following day.  As he left, John picked up an apple that was part of a display marked with a price of $500, took a bite of the apple and replaced it.  Charming.  Yoko had given no indication that she recognized John Lennon.

Part 1: Yoko Ono, Here & There

Yoko photo-3

Yoko Ono has led a unique life.  Known as both a multi-media artist and as the wife of John Lennon, she has always maintained a life-style and personality that demonstrated her freedom to be herself, to express herself.

In this first of a series of postings, her natal chart for Tokyo, Japan and her relocated natal chart for New York, New York will be examined.  The focus will be to see what these two locations meant for her life expression.  The natal planets and interpretation will be picked up, bit by bit, as we look at charts relating to several events in her life to be covered in later postings.

Tokyo, Japan natal chart.  The Ascendant is 8 Libra, the MC is at 9 Cancer, both are in forceful and active signs.  The Cancer MC suggests a life with goals that reflect inner values and self-security when in the public view.  The Libra Ascendant  points to an outer calmness and balance.  To understand this combination better, we need to consider two factors; the Moon-Sun relationship and her early family life.

YOnataltokyo

Sun in Pisces, Moon in Sag.  Sun, Pisces, 5th house reflects a creative, imaginative personality.  No major aspects relate to the Sun.  A midpoint of Sun=Mars/Venus is exact within 0d-5m indicating a passion for physical love and creative expression. A second midpoint, Sun=Saturn/Jupiter is within 0d-50m of exactness; one who runs their life as a business, blending discipline and opportunity successfully.   Moon, 3rd, Sag. squares Neptune and the Moon’s nodal axis.  Moon-Neptune points towards moodiness, wild imagination, uncertainty over domestic life and its value to her.  Moon-Nodes shows an emotional conflict when dealing with associates and the public.  Why?  Let’s look at some other factors first.  Moon is in the last-quarter phase to the Sun; this indicates one who sets their own public stance and leaves it up to others to follow along.  It is one sign of personal leadership, of being one who is ahead of the crowd.

Yoko’s early life.  Yoiko’s family was socially well-placed in Japan, closely aligned with the country’s elite and royal family, financially well-off, and highly respected.  Yoko was raised by servants.  Her father was always working as a banker, her mother was socially active and often absent from daily life.  Yoko noted that life was like living with a movie star, her mother was always dressing and appearing at events, Yoko was always home by herself.  She developed a liking for books, learning, creative efforts and contemplation.

While still young, Yoko’s family moved to New York.  That chart is shown below.

YOnatalNewYork

We now see a very different set of angles. Aquarius Ascendant and a Sag. MC point to one who is more aloof and focused on broad social issues, and who likes to move through those social circles in order to find their own goals and public stance.

Note that Sun is now in the first house, Moon is in the 10th, both ‘angular.’  Yoko will more easily find her creative expression in New York.

The natal chart eclipses.  A pre-natal Solar Eclipse at 9 Virgo on Aug. 31, 1932 lies near Yoko’s Neptune. Imagination, romance and drama are all involved in this eclipse imprint which will be directed to the public in general.  The relocated-to-New York chart moves this eclipse point to the seventh house, suggesting a more personal, individual presentation of her art expression.  A Lunar Eclipse occurred two weeks later at 21 Virgo, close to Yoko’s Jupiter; this is not often as beneficial as one might think.  A lunar eclipse blocks the Sun’s light from reaching the Earth.  Rather than bringing bounty and gifts, this pattern leaves one with a need to try harder to make each opportunity in life count to the maximum.  A solar eclipse did occur several weeks after Yoko’s birth at 5 Pisces, close to her Mercury.  This relates to movement such as travel, frequent relocation of one’s home, meeting many people, sharing thoughts, a busy life among the public.

All of these factors do indeed have meaning for Yoko as has been demonstrated in her life up until this point.  In future postings, events in her life will be examined using Return charts.  As opportunity presents itself, we can look at midpoints, more eclipses, asteroids and other astrological approaches.  Dave.

Edited to add . . .

When I ran a midpoint and aspect listing for Tokyo and for New York, there was a big difference in the number of listings.

For Tokyo (within 1 degree), MC-sextile-Mercury, Asc-quincunx-Mercury, Desc.-quincunx-Neptune.

For New York (within 1 degree), MC-square-Mercury, MC-Neptune, Asc-sextile-Uranus, Asc-quincunx-Jupiter, Asc-quincunx-Pluto, MC=Mercury/Neptune, MC=Sun/Mars.

New York, as a location, conveys more planetary symbolism and an active life for Yoko.

The Duke of Wellington at Waterloo

Wellington photo-3

The Duke of Wellington was born in Dublin, Ireland on May 1, 1769.  The charts shown below are relocated to Waterloo, Belgium.  Since the Duke was born late at night, the shift to the east (for relocation) moves his birth date to May 2, 1769.

Relocating Wellington’s natal chart from Dublin, Ireland to Waterloo, Belgium moves his Ascendant from 22:33 Sag to 18:56 Capricorn . . . a shift of almost a full sign.  In Dublin he had the North Node on his Ascendant.  At Waterloo he had Pluto on his natal Ascendant and Part of Fortune conjunct Jupiter at the MC.  Clearly, Waterloo was a great place for him to be.  We can look at his natal chart below.

Wellington Waterloo natal corrected

The chart’s title indicates this is “corrected.”  I’m still getting used to StarFisher, the software used to create these charts, and had allowed the time to be PM (which it was in Dublin, Ireland) instead of AM (which it was when relocated to Waterloo, Belgium).  This chart is shown as black on white.  StarFisher offers three presentation modes, black on white, black/colors on parchment, and colors on black background.  Note here the Sun-Urnanus conjunction which fits with Wellington’s aloofness relative to others.  Curious is his Part of Fortune conjunct the Moon — this is due to the Moon’s distance from the Sun being the same distance as the Ascendant is from the Moon.

duke-wellington photo-5

Wellington had a well trained, equipped artillery unit which he had set up behind the top of a ridge line where is could not be seen by the enemy forces.  A road and hedgerow ran along the ridge line, hiding his foot soldiers.  A steep slope ran down to a lush valley of farmland.  The night before the battle of June 18, 1815, it had rained.  The lush valley was very wet with water.  Tall fields of rye took advantage of this fertile area.  Wellington had also manned to walled farms in the valley, serving as both outposts and hindrances to any advancing foot soldiers of Napoleon.  It should be noted that the accuracy of the soldiers muskets at this time was so poor that shots fired as close as 20 or 30 feet often missed their intended target.  During the battle, one of the farm houses never fell to the enemy.  Neither did it have any impact on the overall course of the battle even though many French troops died around it walls.

The t/Moon-opp-n/Sun Return for Wellington occurred on the day of the battle.  Return charts that mark events on-or-close-to the Return date are often quite “strong” in their interpretive effects.  Transits are inside, the relocated natal planets are outside.  Note the n/Asc.-n/Pluto near the MC.  This fortunate location for Wellington is the focus of his plans and goal to defeat Napoleon.  His stars are aligned for this date and place.  Note t/PoF squares n/PoF;  chance and change will ebb and flow, the outcome is hard to see ahead of time.  Another interesting factor is t/Mars-t/Pluto emphasizing n/Mars opposite n/Pluto.  The concept of war and application of force will put into practice on this date.

Wellington’s Return chart is clearly better than Napoleon’s Advanced chart.  Yet, both of them had similar problems on the day of the battle, problems that centered on their ability or need to communicate with their troops and field marshals.  Napoleon never went to a place where he could oversee the battle.  He remained mile behind the lines, nursing his hemorrhoids and remaining unconcerned about the batle.  His commanders awaited orders and direction, never received any, and missed many opportunities.  On the other hand, Wellington was very much present at the front lines but his several allied armies would not heed his requests and never engaged fully in the battle.  His own forces were quite small compared to Napoleon’s forces.  But, his command presence made the difference, while Napoleon’s lack of presence also made a difference . . . permitting bad decisions and missed opportunities, resulting in confusion, defeat, and retreat.

I hope these two examples will encourage my followers to download and use StarFisher.  The full instructions are found under the menu choice of CALCULATIONS, along with download guidelines, features, and steps to create natal and Return charts.  Dave.

Napoleon At Waterloo

This posting will use charts created with StarFisher, the free-to-download, free-to-use astrological software that was introduced in the last posting.  Full instructions for downloading and using that software can be found in the menu under CALCULATIONS.

Bonepart, or Emperor Napoleon 1 as we was later known, returned from exile and raised an army to free France and annex land now known as Belgium.  As his army advanced from Paris, an army led by the British Duke of Wellington was approaching him.  They met in an area called Waterloo.  Wellington stopped at a ridge line overlooking a valley.  Among the hills and villages on the other side of the valley were the French forces of Emperor Napoleon 1.  A road led along the top of the ridge line, with thick hedges lining the road at the drop-off of land to the vallley below.  Wellington placed his artillery behind the road and below it where it would be safe from counter-fire and yet able to easily bombard the area in front.  The foot-soldiers were hid among the thicket overlooking the valley, and out of sight of the French.  Let us look at Napoleon’s Sun-to-Moon Return for June 12, 1815, six days before the long one-day battle.

04 Natal chart

Above is Napoleon’s natal chart, cast for August 15, 1769 at 11:00 AM, Ajaccio, France as it appears on the StarFisher screen.  The chart can also be displayed as black lines on a white field, or as colored lines on a black field.  Planets and aspect lines can be colored as the user wishes.  Note Mercury-MC; one who can articulate his goals and vision in life.  There are three oppositions in the chart; Moon-Saturn, Jupiter-Uranus, and Venus-Pluto.  Moon-opp-Saturn suggests he is a person who will re-make his identity as often as it is required.  After being banished from France, he returned and made himself Emperor.  Jupiter-opp-Uranus indicates one who seizes opportunity as it suits his needs.  Venus-Pluto points to an intense passion, in this case his love for France and his place within it as Emperor.  We will leave this brief and incomplete look at his natal chart and examine his t/Moon-to-n/Sun Return for June 12, 1815, six days before the h16 Swap to transits inside

This is a 2nd house t/Moon-to-n/Sun Return, a theme that focuses upon pride, self-esteem and personal values.  As always, transits are inside, natal positions outside.  I have neglected to show n/Chiron at 23 Pisces, conjoined by t/Mars (20 Pisces) and t/Pluto (22 Pisces).  Napoleon had continuing problems with hemorrhoids and urinary tract infections.  At this time the n/Chiron-t/Mars-t/Pluto combined to bring these off-on issues into a debilitating condition which became worse with each passing day.  He had t/Venus-Asc. opp. n/Moon; he was popular.  t/Part of Fortune squared t/Moon-n/Sun; the balance of his life’s efforts was in a make-or-break mode.   Let us take a peek at the Advanced chart for June 18, 1815.

17 Advanced chart

Sun-square-t/Mars, t/Pluto; Napoleon’s vitality is hampered by his medical condition.  t/Moon-n/Jupiter opposes n/Uranus, squares t/Saturn;  Napoleon wants very much to grab this opportunity to defeat the allied army led by Wellington.  Yet, unexpected events make this a challenge for him.  We have to turn our attention back to battlefield on that eventful day.

Fighting photo-2Wellington had chosen the ridge overlooking the valley for his place to fight from.  He was waiting for Napoleon to advance to him.  It took several days for the large French army to move along narrow roads and one-lane bridges to the hills on the other side of the valley. Napoleon had given orders to his Marshals.  An artillery attack began, causing a great amount of smoke which blocked the view from the hills on the French side.  It was not easy to direct a battle from the safety of a vantage point.  Troops advanced across the valley and up the hill.  The farmland was wet with rain, thick with mud, and planted with Rye which was tall by mid-June.  The advance was slow.  Then, the musket fire from the ridge, and the shells from the cannon made their impact on the troops.  Those that made it to the top of the ridge couldn’t get through the thicket and were shot a close range.  The first of many retreats followed.  The horsemen followed, churning up the planted fields and mud, and ended up being repulsed at the top of the ridge line.  Then the French cannon took up the cause with more success.  The shells that didn’t land and explode among the troops rolled across the ridge line and down the rear-slope, exploding among the English cannon.  The day witnessed waves of fighting and dreadful amounts of dying and wounded.  The English forces gradually became thin and battle-weary.

Yet, Napoleon’s medical condition had him so turned inward that he couldn’t care less about the battle.  At last the pleading of the field commanders prevailed upon him to release the French Garde, the elite of his army.  Marching en-mass in column formation, they were watched by the English and their allies.  A virtual river of troops were marching forward in column formation.  Impressive, but foolish.  As this mass of troops crossed the valley, the slogging soldiers had difficulty with the mud.  As the troops in front slowed, the troops behind piled up, broke ranks, spread out.  As they advanced up the hill, their situation became worse.  Only the few in front of the thousands behind them could fire.  They were also the ones who were hit, fell and died.  The confusion increased, the order broke down.  The retreat began.  The battle was over.

So, does this chart work as a definition of Napoleon’s loss?  t/Saturn-Desc. points to constraints in working with others.  Instead of working with Saturn’s ‘discipline’ he chose to work with Saturn’s constraint and depression.  His n/Asc. was in the fourth house of starts and endings.  His n/MC-Mercury opposed t/Saturn; his goals were constrained.  To assess this chart relative to a battle, we will need to look at Wellington’s chart.  That will be done in the next posting.

Meanwhile, this illustrates the recently-introduced StarFisher astrological software that is available for any to download and use for the purposes of not only creating Sun-Moon Returns, but for most other astrological charting practices.  Dave
