An essay on calculating t/Moon-to-n/Sun charts . . .

Under the “calculations” menu choice I have added the instructions for using Kepler or Sirius astrological software to calculate Moon-to-Sun or Moon-opposite-Sun Return charts.  Later I expect to add instructions for the use of Solar Fire, Halloran, Windows Express and other software applications.  Dave.

Part Seven: Solar Returns, Mercury the Trickster

Carol-Julie-Silvina Photo

February 16, 1999 was the day Carole Sund, her daughter and her friend were killed by Cary Stayner at a cabin near the entrance of Multi-Views logo-JYosemite National Park in California.  In this post a Solar Return and Prog’d Daily Angles chart will be examined for that terrible day when three women lost their lives because Cary Stayner had a bad childhood and decided that he wanted to hurt women to make up for that.

Carole Sund’s last Solar Return occurred some nine months before her last day of life.

Carole SR 1998-J

The p.c. 1998 S/R for April 26, 1998, relocated to a site at the edge of Yosemite National Park, CA, shows the Asc. angle populated by t/Mercury.  We think of Mercury as meaning conversation, short trips, letters and phone calls, activity in the neighborhood, an indicator of one’s mental acuity.  In this case Mercury’s role as a trickster is one of the correlations to keep in mind.

The p.c. S/R has cardinal signs at the angles, an active year is in store.  Mercury at the Asc. angle indicates travel, local business, communication and perception being a key factor for the year.  This is the key indicator for the annual period starting with her birthdate.  t/Sun-n/Sun occurs in the 1st house, conjoining t/Moon (and t/Mars); Carole’s will, intent and life direction involves relationships and action related to those relationships.  This pattern of Sun-Sun-Moon-Mars is important; note the group’s square to n/Mars;  Contention between Carole and another is indicated.  With n/Mars at the midpoint of t/Neptune-t/Uranus, her ability to fight back or maintain her presence is somewhat weakened–the natal versions of these two are in square aspect, her identity and uniqueness somehow escapes her, she is often trying to find her place in the world.

We should note the CD point (the Co-Descendant) at 1 degree Libra.  The CD point is located relative to the MC by the same arc of degrees as the MC has relative to the Asc. (95 degrees) yields the CD’s position.  The CD point indicates where uninvited change enters your life and brings disruption.  The CD opposes the n/MC, or conjoins the n/IC angle.  Life altering changes are to be expected.

We can also look at the Asc.-MC midpoint, commonly known as the “here and now” point.  This point opposes n/Jupiter-n/Pluto.  What might we make of this supportive feature?  One’s success and striving is countered by another’s goals.  One might apply other meanings, but this sort of fits the context of events to come.

In summary, t/Mercury at the Asc. is the primary interpretive feature, closely supported by transiting Sun-Moon-Mars square n/Mars.  A whole new situation involving conrontation is part of the annual pattern for Carole.  This concise view of the chart is all that can be said for the Solar Return.

Carole PDA 2-16-1999-J

Advancing the angles for the date of Feb. 16, 1999, the day of her murder, and the murder of her daughter and daughter’s friend, we find 17 Capricorn on the MC and 19 Aries on the Asc. angle.  On this date t/Saturn is on the Asc.; One is constrained, treated harshly, the ability to act is limited.

More significant is n/Asc. at the PDA IC angle; the book, Personal Prediction notes, ”A new face or totally changed conditions requires (or brings) an unexpected approach to the day’s activities.  How do others (or you) handle the surprises (brought to you/them)?  You may find yourself acting spontaneously in order to obtain someone’s support.”  This obviously has to be adjusted to fit the highly extreme and unusual situation of this date.  The n/Asc. represents one’s actions, physical person or space, ability to keep life’s situations in balance.  Being at the IC of the daily chart, this physical self and well-being is challenged to survive, move on, or bring things to an end.

n/Sun (one’s vitality and intent) is opposed by t/Mars and squared by n/Mars.  This n/Sun square n/Mars was mentioned in prior posts as suggesting a life-theme of occasional physical challenges that have to be met.  This could consist of sporting activities such as hiking or rock climbing, it could also be personal fights or being in dangerous situations.  In this case, the natal pattern is activated.  With n/Sun broadly in opposition across the horizontal axis to n/Neptune, we have to also note the square to t/Neptune — all angular placements.  Deception (another form of Mercury’s trickery) and mis-understanding is in play this day.

We can mentally play with the Asc-MC midpoint (“here and now”) at 8 Pisces, conjoining t/Mercury (the Solar Return’s Mercury-Asc. combo of ‘trickery’)  One’s wits are put to the test.

Carole Sund did not perceive the danger, the trickery of Cary Stayner as he used his maintenance man role to gain entrance to the cabin where he subdued the Mother, Daughter and Friend away from the possible observance of others.  That initial point of seeking control at gun-point was the only possible time of resistance.  Submitting to being bound and gagged was the point of doom for the three women.  Again, would it have been reasonable to refuse to let a man enter the cabin in a semi-deserted area after dark, to take a stand outside of the cabin at their car where the chance of others seeing or hearing any confrontation or gun shots might have prevented the following events?

It has been interesting to see how the various charts examined so far have mirrored the actual events that took place.  But, the story doesn’t end here.   Dave.

Part Six; Linking the Chart’s Ninth House to Murder

Carol Photo 2

We know from previous posts that Cary Stayner murdered Carol Sund, her daughter and her daughter’s friend on Feb. 16, 1999 at Moose Lodge on the edge of Yosemite National Park in California.  In this chart group Carol’s t/Moon-to-n/Mars Return will be examined.  This posting will look into the ninth house of the chart and how we link it to ‘murder.’ This is an exploration of how we might approach house interpretation in these Return-Cyclic charts.  This t/Moon-to-n/Mars Return chart is shown below.

Multi-Views logo-J

SundCarolCarilSundMtoMars2-14-1999

t/Moon conjoins n/Mars in the Return chart’s ninth house.  Let me state right up front that this is a very dynamic chart.  The Moon represents emotions, reactions, fears, primary needs, how we initially relate to others.  Mars symbolizes one’s energy, assertiveness, anger, physical actions, creative expression, sex urges, feeling of being in command, our presence in a given environment as we play a role.  Obviously the manner in which these energies are expressed or felt depends upon whether you are promoting a situation or reacting to a situation–it’s a two-sided coin.  From Carol’s point of view as a victim, Mars is both her fight to survive and the aggression against herself.  Moon is her fears, habit patterns and reactions to aggression and to males in general.  To better understand this pattern located in the ninth house, we have to go back to the natal chart.

The natal chart portrays a T-Square; n/Part of Fortune (n/PoF) and n/Mars opposite the n/Asc. and n/Uranus, both square n/Sun.  This is an angular pattern in fixed signs.  Carol is reckless, spontaneous (PoF-Mars), not able to well handle surprising situations (Asc.-Uranus) due to having her own view and perspective on life (Sun).  She was an open person, used to leading those around her, enjoying life’s pleasures, just being herself — perhaps oblivious to her surroundings or others.  In this Return chart, t/Mars opposes n/Sun and triggers this whole T-Square pattern.  We have, first of all, a doubled up Mars due to the exact square between t/Mars and n/Mars.

What role does the Ninth House play?  First, the Ninth is where we encounter a wider world, people we do not know, the life-style and culture of others–as well as the standard terms of higher education, foreign travel, etc.  We can use ‘derivative houses’ to better understand some of the possible Ninth House meanings.  The 9th is the 3rd house of the 7th house; what others are thinking and doing..  The 9th is the 10th house of the 12th house; secrets and hidden needs of others that affect one’s status and life-direction.  With the n/Sun in the 12th, we can attach its positional meaning to the intent of the murderer because the t/Sun is in the Return chart’s 10th house.  Using specific doubled-up planets (the Sun in this case) clues us to which ‘derivative houses’ to use!

t/Pluto conjoins n/N.Node at the Return Descendant; irrevocable change (t/Pluto) is experienced due to others (n/N.Node and Descendant angle).  This pattern is doubled up due to t/N.Node conjoining n/Jupitr-n/Pluto at the IC.  The n/Jupiter conjoining n/Pluto makes this a huge, enlarged natal characteristic.  This lady liked to live life large, as the saying goes.  t/Uranus at the MC highlights n/Uranus at the n/Asc.; the natal patterns suggests one who makes spontaneous decisions, takes actions without thinking twice about what is involved.

We need to keep this all in mind as we next examine Carol Sunds advanced t/Moon-to-n/Mars Return for two days later, Feb. 16th, 1999.

SundCarolCarilSundMoppSAdv2-16-1999

The Desc. angle has more closely conjoined t/Pluto-n/N.Node;  The ominous nature of t/Pluto-Desc.-n/N.Node is more acute on this date.  t/N.Node conjoins n/Jupiter and n/Pluto; associations with others are highlighted on this date.  t/Sun opposes n/Pluto from the 10th house; one’s intent and life-style is disrupted by circumstances.  That constitutes a doubled up Pluto.

t/PoF conjoins n/Venus and squares t/Venus; love-lust, sex and physical attraction play a role in this day’s events–it is just that these are another’s expressions that are experienced by Carol Sund.  Another trigger in these cyclic charts is t/Moon.  Here, t/Moon squares n/Saturn from the 10th to the 6th; personal values, cautions and adherence to social rules is challenged.  .  How does all of this play out in real life?

Carol and the two girls are in a cluster of cabins that is somewhat remote.  There are few other people around.  It is dark.  They are about to leave in their car.  A stranger walks up and engages them in conversation.  There is a need to for the stranger, a maintenance man to go into the cabin to check on something that may need fixing.  They had not noted anything wrong in their cabin.  Why would Carol let a stranger in their cabin after dark when there were few other people nearby?  Cary took out a gun, duct-taped their mouths and wrists, assured them they would be OK if they obeyed him, placed them in their car and drove into the woods where they were killed.

All of the amplified natal chart qualities noted earlier have come into play.  No initial resistance was offered–it was too late afterwards.  No initial caution was exercised.  Being in a strange place, under isolated conditions, after dark should have set off alarm bells in someone’s head.  The charts mirrors the event.

Comment:  As astrologers we need to not overlook any chart feature which appears to not to fit–such as t/Moon-to-n/Mars in the 9th house.  We need to find out how this pattern, or other such patterns, mirrors the life of the subject!  In this case, the use of ‘derived houses’ adds more perspective to the situation.  So does the appreciation of the natal chart’s planets and planet aspect patterns.  One gains the sense that this California woman from Santa Rosa just enjoyed life.  I suspect that she assumed the best in others, paid little attention to the shortfalls in others.  This may have been the primary reason for her lack of caution that fateful evening when Cary gained access to their cabin, to their vulnerability.

Working with these Return-Cyclic charts sometimes promotes the taking of short cuts in the analysis of the natal chart.  However, always trying to discover how the chart reflects the events in the subject’s life forces us to stop and dig for information.  Your comments?

Part 5: t/Moon-to-n/Sun chart for murder victim of Cary Stayner

Carole Photo 1

Carol Sund, her daughter Juli, and Silvina Pelosso visited Yosemite National Park as part of a vacation tour that had included Disney Land. Their guest, Silvina, was a friend of Juli.  They stayed in a cabin complex near the park on the night of Feb. 15th, 1999.  Cary Stayner visited the cabin in his role of maintenance man, pulled a gun and told the women he was going to rob them.  They were told to be quiet and that no harm would come to them.  They complied.   Stayner took them and their car into the woods, strangled Carol and Silvina, and took Juli with him.  After riding around for an hour, he slashed her throat and threw her body into a ravine.  He later went back and hid the car, torched it, and returned to his regular life routine.

The t/Moon-opposite-n/Sun Return, 12th to 6th house, occurred on Feb. 7, 1999 and is shown below.

The first step is to evaluate the house position(s) of t/Moon and n/Sun as this tells of of a “theme” for the following two-week cycle. From the book-in-progress; “Being tugged in two directions; personal needs and goals versus helping others or relating to the actions of others. Anxiety over balancing life’s issues. Two jobs, helping or mentoring a child, training others, charitable work and fund raising, making plans for one’s future. How to maintain a balance is critical.”  The sixth-twelfth house polarity seems to leave one feeling subject to strain, opposing factions and needs. What one needs, what one can give, how to balance demands, what choices to make.

Carol Sund’s n/Sun squares n/Mars, suggesting that she had prior experiences with managing the aggression of others as well as how to manage herself when challenged.  The n/Moon in a 7th house relationship to n/Sun amplifies this pattern of dealing with others. Further amplification comes from n/Sun squaring her n/Asc.; she can fight for herself, she is not afraid of confrontation.  We will see how her natal chart failed her.

In this Return chart n/Mercury is angular at the Desc. angle while n/Venus is near the IC angle.  Travel, communication and daily activities of interest and learning are on her agenda.  A pleasant agenda is looked forward to.  That’s it in terms of what this chart will tell us.  We have learned that 1) Carol will experience having to make decisions that pull her instincts in both directions, will have to judge the words and actions of others.  2)  She has dealt with relationship and confrontation issues before, is perhaps a person who is attracted to such situations and who then seeks to manage them.  3)  She is engaged in this cycle with travel, communicating, learning and having a pleasant and satisfying experience during her vacation.

SundCarolCarilSundMoppSAdv2-16-1999

The chart above reflects the date of her murder and the murder of her daughter Julie and friend Silvina.  Cary Seyton, after entering their cabin to fix something (as the location’s maintenance man) brandished a gun, duct-taped the three women.  It was at this point, at the compound of cabins, when the best chance of not complying with his demands might have worked out.  Given the threat, the women complied and were led out into their car to be driven to their fate.  No confrontation, just a poor decision — although a decision that can be understood.  What does the chart show?

t/Part-of-Fortune (t/PoF) conjoins the Asc., n/Saturn and squares t/Mercury:  Restrictions and hindrances drastically affect (Asc.) Carol’s person and situation.  She has trouble talking her way around a situation. With t/PoF so prominent at the Asc. angle we have to look at n/PoF which conjoins n/Mars; this blends Asc.-Saturn-PoF-Mars all together when we play astrological hopscotch — frustration, anger, chance and change, one’s personal space.  These make for a dangerous combination.

t/Pluto in the 1st conjoins n/N.Node while t/Sun opposes n/Pluto.  We have a doubled up Pluto here, suggesting overwhelming confrontation and denial of any influence.  Pluto often bring irrevocable change as part of its expression.  Since t/Sun is involved, lets look at n/Sun which opposes t/Mars;  the self is challenged by another.  Doubled up Mars’ and Suns; a force of wills, a forceful situation.   t/Moon conjoins t/Sun, a new Moon situation; life suddenly seems to take on new qualities and values.

We see here all of the ingredients for a stressful and dangerous situation.  Do we see murder, specifically?  No.  We do see threats. We see fast changing situations (PoF at Asc.), we see conflicts of wills (the Suns), we see stress (Plutos).  It is only when we take the context of ones life and ones situation into account that we can see murder as a possibility.  Context:  Three women on vacation by themselves.  A mostly secluded cabin complex with few people around.  A man asking for entry into their cabin at night without an established reason to be there — he never said what he was there to fix, they know of nothing wrong that needed fixing, so why not check before granting entry?

The ability to confront, to talk their way out of a situation was controlled by their fear of the gun, by the duct tape put over their mouths and around their wrists, by their compliance.   This is about the limits of what the astrologer might be able to do in terms of prediction or of assessing the situation in hindsight.

More charts and chart types are to follow.  Dave.

Part 4: t/Moon-to-n/Mars Return; Finding the Right Chart For the Right Answers

Cary Photo 2

In this blog a transiting Moon to natal Mars Return chart will be used to examine this brutal action of killing three women tourists at Yosemite National Park in California.  This type of chart has not been used prior to this date to my knowledge.   In any case, there seems to be no public information of constructing, using and reading these types of charts.  So, a little basic information seems useful.

Multi-Views logo-J

The transiting Moon represents one’s emotional energy, reaction-engine to long-held beliefs or needs, fears and one’s personal view of themselves.  The natal Mars covers one’s action-energy, aggressive nature, inclination to act, a Yosemitie NP photo-4sense of presence and dominance/ control over the local scene.  In an extreme situation this pairing can represent an angry outburst.  This form of Return chart therefore portrays how one chooses to express their anger or pent-up power in an attempt to control a situation or another person.  Given that Cary Stayner had long dreamed of hurting women, this vision had been building within him — this period seemed to be the time to let it all out.

StaynerCaryCaryMtoMars2-03-1999

In this t/Moon-to-n/Mars Return chart, the Moon-Mars pairing is found in the 11th house where one generally reaches out to/within the community to seek involvement with others.  This emotional outburst planet pairing will involve the ‘public’ — those outside of the subject’s immediate circle of family, friends, neighbors.

t/Mars conj. n/MC near the Ascendant suggests that one will act (Mars at Asc.) on one’s personal goals (n/MC).  Note n/Neptune close to n/MC and t/Mars which can reflect Cary’s long-held dreams regarding women.  t/Saturn on the Desc. shows a harshness and rigid-view of others.  Playing astrological hopscotch we take note of n/Saturn-n/Jupiter at the IC angle, wherein the ‘business of life’ pairing (Saturn-Jupiter) will take a new, initial step in applying one’s personal rules to an opportunity (note t/Jupiter aligned with t/Moon-to-n/Mars).  t/PoF squares t/Venus-opp-n/Pluto, and opposes t/Pluto.  The normal rule of interpretation is that you start with only angular planets, with the t/Moon, t/PoF, and t/Sun.  Here, t/PoF involves both natal and transiting Pluto — a representative of dark and hidden forces, of brutal control, of destruction.  When we also note t/Neptune and n/Neptune both angular (IC and Asc.) we can see ones distorted vision and dreams coming into play.  So, all of this describes the potential of this period, this two-week cycle.

Above is  the Advanced t/Moon-to-n/Mars chart for the date of the triple murder.  The chart’s Asc. conjoins t/Mars-n/Neptune! A delusional act of aggression.  t/PoF squares n/Sun-n/Mercury-n//Uranus and broadly squares t/Sun (all in angular houses); Chance and change (PoF) challenges Cary’s integrity and life-style, his intent and life-focus.  Apparently he is impelled to live up to a self-image of rebelling against society.  Remember in Part One that he had an upsetting childhood and family life.  He must resent this deeply and the part the his mother/women played in his youthful difficulties (as he perceived them).  t/Uranus is at the IC; the revolution, the pay-back, is about to begin.

When we see t/Mars and t/Uranus both at the angles (Asc. and IC) we can expect suddenness and an excitable person, an unusual amount of energy, argumentative, wilfulness, etc. This is clearly an ACTION date.

There is much more to this story, this taking multiple views of a single event.  We will look at this event through the charts of the mother (one of the three victims) and perhaps the daughter (another of the victims) — as actual birth dates and times are known (in the public record).  We will see what type of charts are most useful for these victims.  Plus, we need to explore other issues that are involved in the use of these cyclic charts.  Dave.

Part Three: Murder viewed through t/Moon-opp-n/Sun Returns

Cary photo 4

In this Part-Three section the murders of three tourists at Yosemite National Park will be viewed through a Moon-to-Sun Return and an Advanced chart.

Multi-Views logo-J

Cary Stayner had a t/Moon-0pposing- n/Sun Return on Feb. 15, 1999, one day before committing murder. The day of, and the day following a Return date (as the start of the cycle) often seem to herald more significant events than those that might occur later in the cycle.  In the t/Moon-n/Sun Return below we find t/Moon in the 9th opposite n/Sun in the 3rd.  There is a generic theme for this pattern;  “The receipt of books or news from afar, being introduced into wider social circles, having to balance short and long term plans, mixed travel plans, schedule conflicts, changes in school venues.  Emotional links broken.”  We need to look at this generic theme as it does not seem to fit the event.

Let us look at the components of this theme.  Moon in the 9th house: Attracted to distant places, foreign cultures (dress, food), being contacted from another area of the country or world, promotional activities.  Tourists don’t exactly fit with ‘foreign’ but may fit with distant places (the young friend of the Sunds was from South America).  So, this sort of fits.
Sun in the 3rd house:
Assessments, decisions, contacting others, visiting and travel. Reaching out and making contact, teaching, lecturing, socializing.  Cary would make a decision to act on a long-held fantasy, he reached out and made contact.  This is the problem when we match generic (everyday) statements to exaggerated-extreme situations (not everyday situations).  Let us look at the chart.

StaynerCaryCaryMoppS2-15-1999

Transiting Part of Fortune at the Ascendant; Acting on impulse, in haste, quickly and taking chances.  t/Mercury at the MC opposite n/Pluto; Thinking about ones goals (the long held fantasy of hurting women).  A hidden agenda  can be acted upon, starting the irrevocable set of circumstances to follow.  Playing astrological hopscotch we can jump from t/PoF to n/Pof which is coming to full conjunction by t/Neptune; Fantasizing about risks and taking chances, dreaming about doing it.  t/Mercury at the MC is mirrored/reflected by the t/Moon opposite n/Mercury.  So, we have doubled up Part of Fortune and Mercury; risk taking.

Let us now look at the Advanced chart for the day of the murders.

StaynerCaryCaryMoppSAdv2-16-2014

In one day, t/Mercury is separating from the MC while t/Moon has conjoined the MC; Emotions take over from the mental imagination process.  t/PoF opposes n/Asc. ( a seven degree orb is used for the t/PoF); Others represent “risk” or the adventure associated with risk.  There are other non-angular supportive aspect patterns which I don’t typically include in these charts.  t/Sun is often a trigger for action, but in this case it is not angular even though it opposes the n/N.Node. t/Saturn opposes n/MC.  While both of these patterns might be said to be descriptive of the event to some degree, experience shows that one cannot count of non-angular conjunctions, oppositions or squares.

These charts are what they are.  A t/Moon-n/Sun Return and Advanced chart shows how we strive to maintain, promote or regain balance in our life.  Perhaps a t/Moon-to-n/Sun Return is not the appropriate type of chart to use.  Think about this.  I’ll have some answers or alternatives in the next posting.

Guidelines for t/Moon-to-n/Sun Return Charts

Quill-1-J

Guidelines for Interpreting Moon-to-Sun Return charts have been posted in the Essay section.  These are provided to help readers better understand the evaluation and interpretive practices of using these “new to mainstream astrology practices” charting methods.  These charts are highly useful for doing short-term predictive work.

Part Two: The Murderer & Solar Return, Daily Charts

Yosemite NP photo-2

Cary Stayner had noticed the pick-up truck before.  When he saw the girls packing up he stopped and chatted, then entered the car and killed Carole Sund, the mother, and her daughter’s friend, keeping Julie Sund alive.  He drove into the mountains, ditched the car and forced Julie Sund to walk down to a lake where he cut her throat and left her Multi-Views logo-Jbody.  Three people killed; for what purpose?  When later captured, Cary would say that he had fantasized for decades about killing women.  The opportunity, the quiet and isolated location, and the victims all came into focus for him.  Later, he torched the rental car of Carole Sund.  The car was not found for many weeks.

Cary Photo 1

In this posting I will use a precession-corrected Solar Return chart (for Aug. 14, 1998).  This chart is shown below.  There are no exactly angular planets, but there are planets in angular houses.  t/Sun conjoins n/Sun in the first house; signifying a year of intended (Sun) action (first house).  Both t/Mercury and n/Mercury closely conjoin the two Suns; suggesting a single-minded purpose to his life this year.  t/Moon squares the Sun/Mercury pairings from the 10th; Cary would struggle to manage the disquiet in his life, the unbalanced urges running through his mind.

t/Saturn in the 10th opposes n/MC in the 4th house, forming a T-square with t/Venus in the 12th.  This may be the most significant pattern in this chart.  Frustration over his goals (Saturn opp. MC) is tied to what he desires most, the killing of women.  He has thought about this for many years.  Eventually one has to either let go of a fantasy or choose to fulfill it.  t/MC opposite n/MC signifies a challenge to one’s goals, one’s status. This is clearly defined as such in my book, Personal Prediction.

Cary SR 1998-J

On Feb. 16, 1999, opportunity presented itself in the guise of three women in a quiet wooded area.  Cary struck.  The Progressed Daily Angles chart for this date is shown below.  The S/R MC of August, 1998 has moved from 25 Aries to 17 Sag in the 6 months interval.  At this point it is helpful to pull a reminder of how the “MC-Solar Cycle” (as described in my book, Personal Prediction) works.

MC-Solar Cycle diagram

We can view a chart’s circle as a wave, a sine wave to be specific.  If the Sun, for example, conjoined the S/R MC, the Sun advances 360 degrees over a 365.25 day annual period.  The MC advances some 450 degrees per year so that it matches up with the following year’s Solar Return MC position which appears to advance some 90 degrees from year to year.  360 degrees plus 90 degrees (the extra quarter-day rotation of the Earth each year) equals 450 degrees.  So, the Solar Return, after a six month interval, would not have the MC opposite its prior solar return position but would have it 180 degrees plus 45 degrees — or 225 degrees, more or less, ahead of its prior position.  Such is the case here were the Feb. 19th advanced MC is 17 Sag.

Cary PDA 2-16-1999-J

In this Progressed Daily Angles chart for Feb. 16, 1999, some six months after the Solar Return chart, we see the t/Sun opposite the n/Sun.  We also see t/Mercury conjoining the Asc. angle (the natal and transiting Mercury’s were conjoining the natal and transiting Suns in the Solar Return), a restatement of the Solar Return symbolism.   Mercury is perception, thoughts, dexterity, travel and many other common keywords known to all of us.  n/Pluto is at the Desc. angle, opposite t/Mercury. This intensifies one’s thinking, clearly making one think of himself as an ‘outsider’ or loner, amplifying the need to be in control.

There are no other angular planets.  What is angular is grouped around the action and experience axis, 1st house to 7th house.  What about ‘timing’ factors?  The t/Moon is often a good timing factor.  Here, t/Moon is six degrees above the chart Ascendant, and at the midpoint of t/Sun-t/Mercury.  Do we want to consider this angular?

Opinion:  There are times in our astrological exploration where we don’t find exact ‘book’ configurations being evident in a chart.  This is one cast.  Another case involved the murder of Lacy Peterson by her husband Scott Peterson back in 2002.  There, the charts weren’t very ‘perfect’ but they fit the moment.  Lacy was murdered on a Monday, the day before Christmas Eve and the day after the last shopping-partying weekend before the holiday.  It was the only time, the only opportunity.  Here, on Feb. 16th, 1999, was Cary’s only opportunity, as he saw it.  Potential victims, easy to overpower victims, isolated area, no people to help or interfere.

In coming posts we will look at this same event using other charting methods.  This series will help us all to better understand how the many cycles in our lives come together.  Dave
